ADVANCE QUEENSLAND JOHNSON & JOHNSON INNOVATION QUICK FIRE CHALLENGE GUIDELINES
About the Challenge
The Queensland Government’s Advance Queensland initiative focuses on growing the economy and creating jobs. This includes investing in science and innovation in order to attract and retain the best and brightest research minds, build Queensland’s reputation and capacity to conduct innovative research and development, deliver new products and services for Queenslanders, and establish new industries that will provide jobs for the future.
Queensland has entered into an innovative partnership with Johnson & Johnson Innovation to foster innovative ideas that will have a positive impact on the Queensland knowledge-based economy through development of new industries, in particular a health product development industry.
The Queensland Government has committed A$300,000 prizemoney for the Advance Queensland Johnson & Johnson Innovation Quick Fire Challenge with up to A$100,000 (excluding GST) each for up to three (3) selected prize winning recipients to fund innovative ideas in the following fields:
- Pharmaceuticals
- Medical devices
- Consumer healthcare
Applicants will be reviewed and up to twelve (12) shortlisted applicants will be offered mentoring with Johnson & Johnson Innovation at a location in Queensland during December 2015 and January 2016.
Johnson & Johnson Innovation will provide shortlisted applicants, including up to three (3) selected prize winning recipients of the Challenge, with mentoring based on its expertise in scientific research, product development and investor engagement and commercial product development.
The winners of the Advance Queensland Johnson & Johnson Innovation Quick Fire Challenge will be announced by 31 March 2016.
Benefits
The Advance Queensland Johnson & Johnson Innovation Quick Fire Challenge will support innovative product development that will have a positive impact on the economy of Queensland. Through attracting innovative companies and individuals to Queensland and promoting the use of research and commercialisation services available in Queensland.
Eligibility criteria
The Advance Queensland Johnson & Johnson Innovation Quick Fire Challenge is open to companies and individuals interested in locating in Queensland to develop their innovative ideas in the field of health product development.
To apply for the Advance Queensland Johnson & Johnson Innovation Quick Fire Challenge you must apply on line through the Johnson & Johnson Innovation portal.
Note: Prizemoney will be awarded to up to three (3) selected prize winning applicants in the form of payment for good and services obtained within Queensland up to the value of A$100,000 (excluding GST).
Using the prizemoney
The prizemoney may be used for the following eligible project costs:
- travel to/from Queensland capped at A$5,000 (excluding GST) that is required as part of the project
- laboratory costs, bench fees
- consumables capped at a value of A$5,000 (excluding GST) required as part of the project
- contract research service costs
- rental costs for the following facilities located in Queensland:
- research laboratories
- wet laboratories
- dry laboratories
- office space
- bio-laboratories and equipment
- chemistry laboratories and equipment
- tissue culture rooms
- equipment rooms – autoclave, glass washer, centrifuge
Only eligible project costs incurred on or after the announcement of the winning applications can be claimed.
Ineligible expenditure
Items not eligible for funding, or to be regarded as matched cash funding, include:
- salary and salary on-costs
- costs associated with other projects of the recipient not the subject of the successful application to the Advance Queensland Johnson & Johnson Innovation Quick Fire Challenge
- costs associated with administrative support staff
- capital expenditure.
Other conditions
- Recipients will be expected to actively promote their development activities, and to provide information and attend media/promotion events if requested.
- The recipient must acknowledge the Queensland Government’s funding in all relevant published material, media releases and public statements.
- The prizemoney is not transferable in cases where a recipient cannot undertake the development activities.
- The recipient must expend the prizemoney within twelve (12) months of award.
- The recipient must provide a financial acquittal statement to the department containing broad details of Queensland Government funding received and expended.
- The project must commence within six (6) months of being awarded the prizemoney.
- The recipient must enter into a funding agreement with the Queensland Government.
Assessment criteria
- Clear alignment with proposal interest areas
- Impact on patient medical need with clearly defined patient populations
- Differentiation from other related programs
- Collaborative approach to innovation
- Novelty and disruptive nature of project
- Likelihood of generating outcomes that can foster new company formation
- Ability to conduct development activities in Queensland expend prizemoney in Queensland on Queensland based research and commercialisation services
- Ability to relocate to Queensland for the period of the product development outlined in the proposal
Application assessment
Applications will be assessed in a competitive, merit based process against the program’s assessment criteria by Johnson & Johnson Innovation and a Queensland Government representative.
Applicants may be contacted during the assessment process to clarify information provided in the application and/or to request additional information to enable the appropriate consideration of the application.
Applications may also be considered in the context of the government’s priorities and the imperative to create jobs for the economy.
Funding agreement
Successful applicant will enter into a legally binding agreement with the Queensland Government. The agreement will consist of your application and the Advance Queensland Johnson & Johnson Innovation Quick Fire Challenge terms and conditions.
You must not enter into any legally binding arrangements with other parties which prevent you/them from meeting obligations under the Advance Queensland Johnson & Johnson Innovation Quick Fire Challenge agreement.
Privacy
The Queensland Government collects and collates information from the application form to evaluate applications for the program. Only authorised departmental officers and Johnson & Johnson Innovation approved assessors have access to this information.
Applicants should note that broad details of successful proposals, agreed outcomes, progress and the level of funding awarded may be published by the Queensland Government.
Some information may be used to promote funded projects.
Your personal information will not be disclosed to any other third party without your consent, unless required by law or for the purposes of Information Privacy Act 2009.
For audit purposes, the Queensland Government is required to retain the applications and other supplied support material.
The provisions of the Right to Information Act 2009 apply to documents in the possession of the Queensland Government.
How to apply
Applications for the Advance Queensland Johnson & Johnson Innovation Quick Fire Challenge open on Thursday, 24 September 2015.
Applications for the Advance Queensland Johnson & Johnson Innovation Quick Fire Challenge close 5.00pm (AEST), Monday, 30 November 2015.
Your application must consist of:
- a completed on-line application form
- an outline of your project and its product development focus
- the services and cost of research and commercialisation services you intend access in Queensland
- your availability to undertake mentoring in Brisbane in December 2015-January 2016
- statement of your ability to relocate to Queensland for the period of product development the subject of your application.
There is no implicit guarantee of approval at any stage of the application process.
The winners of the Advance Queensland Johnson & Johnson Innovation Quick Fire Challenge will be announced by 31 March 2016.
